Who can Foster?

Fusion Fostering is committed to safeguarding and protecting all children and young people by implementing robust safer recruitment practices. We will identify and reject applicants who are unsuitable to work with children and young people.
Aside from a few essential requirements, anyone who has the passion and drive can foster.
We encourage potential applicants to consider a variety of personal factors to ensure they are the perfect fit for this career path.

People from a diverse range of backgrounds can foster

Our foster carers come from all walks of life. No matter what background or culture you belong to, anyone can foster. The most important thing is that you have a fondness for children and want to give something back by providing a warm and loving home. If you are a full-time resident in the UK and are 21 years of age or older, you are eligible to apply to become a foster carer. The only additional requirements are that you have the space and time in the your life (and home) to look after a child. We judge each application on a case-by-case basis. Successful foster care applications are based on suitability to the role and not classifications such as race, gender, or sexuality.

If you have considered fostering before but are worried that your age, marital status or other personal classification will mean you are ineligible, think again! All that Fusion look for in their carers is someone who can safely and securely provide a nurturing home for a child who needs care, whether that be for a day, a week, a month or a year.

Things to consider

When you apply, our team will consider your individual circumstances to check that you are the right type of person to make a fantastic carer. Things we might want to know more information about include:

Your physical health and mental wellbeing
Your current financial circumstance
Your home – do you have a spare bedroom right now, will you in the future?
Your family and friends – do you have a good support network?
Your current experience around children and young people
Your ability to get around the local area e.g. drive or public transport
Any past experiences such as a criminal record or having lived abroad
Any pets you may have living with you in your household
Any previous convictions that would prohibit you from working with children or young people

These factors allow us to check how suitable you would be for a fostering career. We want to make sure that not only will you make a good carer, but that it is a career well suited to you and a lifestyle choice that you will take value from too! We want to know that you are well-equipped to deal with the role and have the best facilities and support network around you to provide amazing care. Don’t let these types of questions put you off, however, any issue can be discussed. We understand that everyone is different and will have varying experiences and personal circumstances.

Personal qualities

Your personality will play a huge part in your role as a foster carer. Certain personal characteristics will make you extremely well-suited to caring for others. Make sure to consider your general approach to life and any personal quirks or attributes you possess. Personal qualities that make for a fantastic foster parent include:

Patient, supportive & empathetic
Confident and assured (able to handle challenging behaviour)
Resilient & perseverant
Young at heart (sense of fun and enthusiasm!)
Being a team player
Willingness to learn and develop
